Connie Connally is an abstract painter influenced by the evolving tradition of abstract expressionism; she cites Joan Mitchell as her main influence. Connally currently resides in Santa Barbara, California. It is the natural beauty of this California coastline that inspires Connally's vivid palette of color and rhythmic, fluid brushstrokes.
“My abstract paintings actually start by working plein-air (in the open air) with small drawings in pastel or gouache. It is a means of establishing a link between me and what I am seeing in the landscape." These drawings inspire the lush oil on canvas paintings that lay somewhere between abstraction and realism. Her multi-layered surfaces are full of sun-drenched colors that are woven into “poetic colorscapes.”
Connie Connally grew up in the Midwest, educated at Oklahoma University and Wichita State University and later earned an MFA at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
